THE National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) has recovered five babies sold at N400, 000 each to buyers by members of a syndicate.
The babies were taken by the syndicate from young ladies in their cells in Abuja, Enugu, Lagos and Minna and distributed to highest bidders.
Assistant Director, Press and Public Relations of the anti-trafficking agency, Mr Orakwe Arinze, who briefed newsmen on the development in Abuja on Tuesday, said the syndicate specialised in procurement, abduction and sale of babies.
He revealed that two suspects, Mr Kingsley Linus and Martina Onwelikwe, had been arrested in connection with the illicit deal and would be handed over to the police for prosecution.
According to him, on the 31st August, 2012, the National Human Rights Commission transferred the case of a 16-year-old orphan, Peace Prisca Asugwo, to NAPTIP for investigation.
Arinze further disclosed that the Nigeria Police, Niger State police command, Minna, also transferred a case of criminal conspiracy, abduction and human trafficking involving four suspects, three victims and four children to the agency.
NAPTIP's investigation revealed that Linus, who dispossessed Asugwuo of her baby, runs a syndicate, which lures young mothers into its trap and dispossessed them of their babies for sale.
