Nigerian soldiers kill 30 civilians

Nigerian soldiers have killed at least 30 civilians and set homes and shops ablaze after a bomb targeted an army patrol in the volatile northeastern city of Maiduguri, witnesses said.

According to a military statement, troops were deployed to the area following the Monday blast that hit a military patrol van and wounded at least two soldiers.

"Initially, soldiers that came after the explosion harassed residents, whipping them. But later they went on a shooting spree and started setting homes and shops on fire" said one Maiduguri resident on condition of anonymity.

"Soldiers came into the neighborhood and started attacking people, shooting everybody in sight," said another resident of the city who also demanded not to be named.

Rights groups have already accused the military of the African country of using heavy-handed tactics in response to attacks on their personnel.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Monday's attack on the military vehicle, but it resembled those previously carried out by the Boko Haram militant group.

On May 11, Nigerian security forces arrested Suleiman Mohammed, Boko Haram's head of operations in Kano, along with his wife and five children, during a raid on his house in the northern city.

The group has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since 2009.
